USSR 1957 The Start of International Geophysical Year

The International Geophysical Year (IGY) was an international scientific project that lasted from 1 July 1957 to 31 December 1958.

This "Solar Studies" stamp, designed by Ye. Gundobin, was one of the three Russian stamps from the first series of Russian stamps commemorating the International Geophysical Year (IGY). It shows two individuals working with a refractive telescope. The telescope is inside of a observatory dome that has its viewing aperture open. The Sun can be seen in that opening. The text in the label-box above the telescope reads "Study of Solar Activity" in Russian.
